Also known as the Chinese
Gooseberry and Yang-tao. The kiwifruit is native to the Yangtze
River valley of northern China. The first seeds were brought out of
China by missionaries to New Zealand at the turn of this century.
The flavor is sweet/tart to
acid, somewhat like that of the gooseberry with a suggestion of
strawberry.
Kiwi is also a top source of
lutein. Lutein is not only an antioxidant that can be beneficial in
reducing the risks of cancer and heart disease, it appears that it can
protect the eyes from a disease known as age-related macular degeneration,
as well as cataracts.
Real
Australian Kiwi comes peeled in a sweet candied glaze.
